Austria joins the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project “SouthH2”

Vienna, January 22 / WAM / Austria signed an agreement including Germany, Italy, Algeria and Tunisia to develop the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SouthH2), which connects North Africa with Europe to transport green hydrogen through pipelines extending about 3,500 kilometers, making energy supplies in the European continent more sustainable. And independence.

Jürgen Schneider, Head of the Climate and Energy Department of the Austrian Ministry of Climate, participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement, which allows the import of more than four million tons of green hydrogen annually, and covers about 40% of the needs of the European Union plan in 2030, in which the system begins to operate at full capacity. .

The Austrian official explained that the “SouthH2” corridor adopts an innovative approach by reusing large parts of the existing natural gas infrastructure to transport hydrogen, which helps significantly reduce construction costs and time, in conjunction with the construction of new pipelines that accommodate larger quantities of hydrogen.

He pointed out that international cooperation is key to overcoming global challenges, and said, “We must use the potential of green hydrogen to accelerate the energy transition and achieve climate goals.”

Energy experts in Austria view the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project as one of the largest and most important renewable energy projects to transport green hydrogen from the sunny regions of North African countries via Italy to Austria and Germany, which contributes to creating a sustainable energy future by linking the continents of Africa and Europe and intensifying Cooperation across the Mediterranean.
