22 states reject Trump’s decision to revoke birthright of American citizenship

Prosecutors from 22 US states have filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, in an attempt to challenge an executive order through which he ended the birthright of US citizenship, and it is the beginning of what promises to be a long legal battle over the immigration policies pursued by the new administration, according to a newspaper. “New York Times”.
The lawsuit, filed by 18 Democratic attorneys general, accuses Trump of seeking to overturn “a long-standing constitutional principle” by executive order.
The text of the lawsuit stated: “The President has no authority to rewrite or repeal a constitutional amendment or a validly passed law, nor may he under any other source of law restrict who obtains American citizenship at birth.”
Subsequently, four other states filed a similar lawsuit, asking a federal court to block the implementation or imposition of the executive order, bringing the total number of states to 22 states.
US District Court Judge John Kovnor, on Tuesday evening, scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, to consider a request submitted by four states to issue a temporary injunction against Trump’s executive order, as Judge Kovnor, who was nominated by former President Ronald Reagan, is likely to be the judge. , the first judge to rule on Trump’s executive order.
According to the states’ lawsuit, about 150,000 children born each year to non-U.S. parents who lack legal status could lose access to basic health care, foster care and early interventions for infants, toddlers and students with disabilities, ABC News reported.
Following his inauguration as president, Trump signed an executive order through which he ended the right to acquire American citizenship by birth, a right guaranteed by the United States Constitution.
Trump’s order directed federal agencies, starting in February 2025, to stop issuing citizenship documents to children born in the United States to undocumented mothers or mothers in the country on temporary visas, if the father is not an American or a permanent resident.
