Minister of Environment: Launching a guide to support the implementation of afforestation plans

The Ministry of Environment launched during the major celebration it organized on the occasion of National Environment Day 2025 under the slogan " A green, sustainable Egypt: towards a circular economy and a just green transition. The guideline to support the implementation of afforestation plans, one of the executive steps of the presidential initiative to plant 100 million trees, is within the outputs of the advisory committee to support the role of the Ministry of Environment in the afforestation file, which was formed by decision of the Minister of Environment No. 178 dated 8/5/2024 AD, and includes specialized experts from Universities, the Agricultural Research Center and Civil Society, headed by Dr. Ayman Farid Abu Hadid, Chairman of the Special Technical Support Committee for the Afforestation File, as a response to the outcomes of the community dialogue on the 100 Million Trees Initiative, Within the framework of implementing the government’s work program 2024-2027, which includes completing the implementation of the presidential initiative (100 million trees) to reduce pollution, raise the rate of greening, and ensure environmental sustainability.

 

 

Dr. Amr Rabie, Professor of Arboriculture and Forestry at the Agricultural Research Center, member of the Advisory Committee, reviewed the details of the guideline to support the afforestation file, explaining that the initiative’s strategy The 100 million trees, which are being implemented to accelerate according to the timetable set for them within 7 years, and according to the division of the number of trees that will be planted by the ministries, as the Ministry of Environment is planting (13 million trees), and the Ministry of Local Development (80 million trees), provided that the Ministry of Housing will plant (7 million trees) during the period from 2023 to 2029, as the initiative aims to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gases, and double the per capita share of green space. And preserving the health of citizens.

Dr. explained. Amr Rabie, said that the guideline prepared by the committee included a proposal for the types of trees that can be planted in the governorates of the Republic according to each geographical scope, and the advantages of each type of these types, as the country was divided into several regions according to multiple factors such as climate, land type, etc., noting. He pointed out that each environmental zone has appropriate species that give the best vegetative growth and the highest economic yield.

 

Dr. pointed out. Amr Rabie, to the environmental and economic returns, as the expansion of afforestation has many environmental, aesthetic, economic and social benefits, including that it represents a real investment in renewable natural plant sources, and it also works to reduce evaporation from water bodies, protect against the negative effects of climate change, and reduce desertification. Improving the properties of the soil and increasing its fertility, protecting the valley and delta lands from the arrival of sand dunes, protecting archaeological areas so that they are not exposed to negative effects as a result of the accumulation of sand on them, as well as reducing the water level. It is also considered an urgent necessity to increase the assessment of governorates and tourist cities from an environmental perspective, which will be reflected in the increase in incoming tourism to these places. It also represents a source of biofuel represented by (Jatropha – Jojoba) shrubs, and helps in establishing industries based on the products of some of these trees, as well as Providing new job opportunities and increasing income for workers in this field.
