The US Coast Guard announced that the Canadian cargo ship Manitoulin is on its way to Canada after it was freed from the ice that trapped it in the frozen Lake Erie for several days.

The US Coast Guard said that the ship did not suffer any damage and that its crew was fine.

Hard-to-break ice

Great Lakes cargo ships often encounter surface ice during the winter, but occasionally encounter ice that is too hard or thick to penetrate.

An icebreaker ship belonging to the US Coast Guard has been working since last Thursday to assist the ship Manitoulin.
On Saturday, officials said a second ship had arrived to help free the ship.
A Canadian Coast Guard ship also participated in the rescue efforts.
