The death toll from the forest fires in South Korea has risen to 31

The authorities in South Korea announced today that the number of victims of the worst forest fires in the country’s history, which swept the southeastern regions until last week, has risen to 31 people.

In a statement, the South Korean Ministry of Interior said that one of the serious injuries as a result of fires in the northern Ghayongang region died while receiving treatment, bringing the total number of deaths to 31.

8 others were seriously injured, and 36 people were slightly injured.

Forest fires caused the destruction of 4015 homes, 1914 agricultural and animal facilities, and 986 other buildings, as well as about 48,000 hectares of forests in 11 regions, which led to the displacement of 3307 people.

South Korea suffers from the repercussions of forest fires, the worst in its history, which has sparked calls for national reforms to deal better with such disasters that have exacerbated during the past years due to mountainous terrain, strong winds and climate change.
