The National Center for Wildlife Development explained that the puppies that bear the characteristics of the terrible wolf and announced recently, is not a process of cloning to the object or re -synthesis, but rather a genetic amendment to the gray wolf.
According to a team of experts at the center, the company executing the new experience introduced 14 gene – some of them from the terrible wolf fossils, some of them dogs – on the gray wolf.
This resulted in a genetically modified object of 99.5 % of the origin of the gray wolf, with physical characteristics closer to the terrible wolf, including increasing the size, white fur color, tail density, thickness of the skin and the size of the fangs.

And the center team indicated that the origin of the “terrible wolf” dates back to prehistoric times, and its spread was in the Americas, and it was extinct 13,000 years ago.
And that what was produced is not a cloning of the extinct type, but rather a genetic amendment to the current gray wolf, using the famous genetic CRISPR-SAS9.
The center pointed to the environmental risks resulting from this type of project, and the extent of its threat to the genetic diversity of authentic organisms.

Gray wolves

According to the center’s experts, the genetic and acquired behavior of these modified organisms is unknown.
Also, the possibility of hybridization with gray wolves may lead to the loss of authentic genetic origins, which poses a threat to biological diversity.
He explained that the introduction of a genetically modified type in the environment may lead to imbalances in the food network, transmit diseases to other types, or affect them unexpectedly.

Extinct

He pointed out that the technology (CRISPR-LAS9) is not new, and has been used for decades in agricultural crops and pets, but the new is to use it with an extinct wild type, which opens wide doors for moral debate about the limits of human intervention in nature.
The center stressed the priority of preserving endangered organisms, through first and more feasible scientific programs than attempts to restore objects, some of which are extinct for thousands of years.
The center pointed out that the company’s announcement was not attached to a scientific paper published in a journal, to give it a reliable scientific document in obtaining the details as usual in similar projects, which makes the judgment on the experiment tainted with fog.
