The Prime Minister of Lebanon to Syria to the first official visit to “correct the path of relations”

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam went to Syria on Monday to meet the transitional president, Ahmed Al -Shara, on a visit aimed at “correcting the path of relations” between the two countries, according to a Lebanese government source said.
It is the first visit to a high -ranking official in the new Lebanese government to Damascus, and comes five months after the overthrow of the regime of former President Bashar al -Assad on the eighth of December.
The government source said that the visit will constitute a “new constituent station to correct the path of relations between the two countries, on the basis of respecting each other,” noting that peace and Sharia “will discuss issues of common concern”, including controlling the security situation at the border, preventing smuggling and closing illegal crossings.
The border between Lebanon and Syria, which extends over 330 km, includes illegal crossings, often used to smuggle individuals, goods and weapons. Last month, the border area witnessed a tension that killed both sides.
Salam intends, according to the same source, to discuss “re -studying old agreements and researching the possibility of setting new agreements” in several fields, except for “forming a committee to investigate many assassinations that took place in Lebanon and the previous regime was accused of being behind them.”
Salam also stated on Sunday that among the goals of his visit is to obtain final information about the fate of the Lebanese missing persons in the prisons of the Assad regime. “I will transfer this issue during my visit to Syria, in the hope that I can return with good news,” he said.
Salam is accompanied on his visit, foreign ministers, Youssef Raji, Defense Michel Mansi and Al -Dhahriya Ahmed Al -Hajjar.
The Lebanese government source stated that the research on the issue of demarcation will be completed during the Monday meeting.
The government source pointed out that the Lebanese delegation will discuss in Syria the file of the return of the Syrian refugees, knowing that Lebanon will host, according to official estimates, 1.5 million Syrian refugees, including 755,426 registered with the United Nations, who fled during the conflict years.
