America gives the green light to Syria to include former foreign fighters of the army

US President Donald Trump’s envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak, said that the United States has agreed to a plan put forward by the new Syrian leadership to allow thousands of foreign fighters who were previously in the opposition to join the National Army, provided that this happens in transparency.

Three Syrian defensive officials said that the plan stipulated that about 3,500 foreign fighters, most of whom are from the Uygur from China and the neighboring countries, have joined a newly formed unit, which is the 84th Division of the Syrian Army, which will also include Syrians.

In response to a question from Reuters in Damascus whether Washington agreed to integrate foreign fighters into the new Syrian army, Barak, who is also the American ambassador to Turkey, said, “I think there is understanding and transparency.”

He added that it is better to keep these foreigners to guarantee a state project instead of excluding them, and he described many of them as “very loyal” to the new Syrian administration.

The fate of the foreigners who joined the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al -Sham during the 13 -year war between the opposition and former President Bashar al -Assad, was one of the most thorny issues that hinder rapprochement with the West since the commission toppled, Assad last year.

The United States was at least in early May asking the new leadership to exclude foreign fighters from the security forces.

But Washington’s approach to Syria has witnessed a significant change since Trump’s tour in the Middle East last month. During this tour, Trump agreed to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria since the era of Assad, and met the interim Syrian president, Ahmed Al -Shara, in Riyadh, and Barak appointed a special envoy to him.
