48% of European youth are concerned about the democratic system in their countries

A recent study stated that only half of the youth in France and Spain believe that the democratic system is the perfect form of government, and they support them with their Poles.

Most young people in Europe, or 57% of the “Z” generation, who are born between the nineties of the last century and 2010, are preferred by the democratic system in any other form of government, but the rates of support varied significantly, reaching only 48% in Poland, and only about 51-52% in Spain and France, while the highest percentage in Germany was 71%.

About 21% of them prefer the totalitarian system under certain unlimited circumstances. This percentage was the highest in Italy, as it reached 24%, and the lowest in Germany by 15%, and in France, Spain and Poland, the percentage reached 23%.

One of every 10 Europeans said they did not care whether the government is democratic or not, while 14% of others said they did not know, or they refused to answer the question.

“Among the people who consider themselves to the right of the center is politically, and they feel economic deprivation, their support for democracy is decreased to one in only three,” said the political expert, the Politanian of Fez, of the “Free University of Berlin”, who participated in this study. He added, “Democracy suffers from pressure from home and abroad.”

This study was conducted in the past April and May, and about 6,700 people participated, between the ages of 16 and 26, from Britain, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Poland. Participants responded to the questions posed by the annual study conducted by the Yogov Institute in the interest of the Foundation Toy Foundation, which funds projects dedicated to youth in Europe.

48% of young men are concerned, as they believe that the democratic system in their country is facing risks, among which are 61% of the Germans, as the German economy, which is the largest in Europe, has become dilapidated, which caused great concern for the German people about the future of their livelihood and their children. The extremist right party has also made remarkable progress in opinion polls and successive elections, partially driven by increasing support for young voters.

The return of US President Donald Trump to the White House, the rise of China and the war in Ukraine, to the transformation of the balance of power away from Europe, in the eyes of the study participants, as only 42% considered the European Union among the three most prominent world powers.

Although the United Kingdom separated from the European Union, or perhaps as a result, the largest percentage among the British was 50%. 73% of the study participants in the United Kingdom wanted to return to the European Union, while nearly half of the European youth or 47% sought stronger relations between the European Union and Britain.

83%of the study participants believe that the United States is part of the “strong trio”, followed by China by 75%, and Russia with 57%.

The growing polarization prompts European youth to increase the ideological margin with the elderly, but a noticeable division between the sexes has emerged in this process. He also described 19% of them themselves as the right -wing political, an increase of 14% in 2021, while 33% described themselves as moderate, 32% as left -wing, and 16% without any classification.

Women in Germany, France, and Italy have been described as “progress” in larger numbers than a study conducted four years ago, while young people in Poland and Greece said they were more conservative in the same period.

Support is increasing to impose severe restrictions on immigrants in general, as it was in 2021, from 26% to 38%. Most European youth expressed their hope for the strength of the European Union.

Two of every three expressed their great support for their country to remain within the European Union bloc, if it is still existing, but 39% described the European Union as not democratic in the way that is being promoted. Only 6% said that their national governments are working well, with a little need for fundamental changes.

About 53% of the youth felt that the European Union focused on details and trivial issues, and ignored many articulated issues. They said they wanted to address the high cost of living in the European Union, support the defense issue against external threats, and to form better conditions for companies to improve the economy.

The head of the Foundation Toy, Elk Haluchik, pointed out that “the European project that brought us peace, freedom of movement and economic progress for decades, is being seen as difficult to manage or control.”

The Greek people believe that there is an urgent need for a fundamental reform of their political system, and they are more doubtful in the European Union, which, the Portan of Fez, described as rooted in the shock of the continuous eurozone debt crisis, which prompted their country’s economy to the edge of the abyss.
