Urgent| President Sisi: Water security is not a luxury…and Egypt confirms its categorical rejection of any unilateral measures taken on the Nile River

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, said in a recorded speech, during the opening session of the eighth Cairo Water Week: “Water security is not a luxury, and sustainable development is not an option. Rather, they are two inherent rights that can only be protected through a fair partnership, based on the principles of international law, embodying the spirit of mutual benefit.” It upholds the importance of non-harm, and recognizes that the right to benefit is always accompanied by the duty to respect rights.

President Sisi continued: “From this standpoint; Egypt declares, clearly and firmly, its categorical rejection of any unilateral measures taken on the Nile River that ignore international norms and agreements, threaten the interests of the peoples of the basin, and undermine the foundations of justice and stability. Development; It is not a privilege for a specific country, but rather a collective responsibility for all the peoples of the river, and a right that is protected by cooperation, not by exclusivity.”

The Eighth Cairo Water Week

It is worth noting that the activities of the eighth Cairo Water Week were launched today under the slogan “Innovative solutions for resilience to climate change and sustainability of water resources,” with broad participation from ministers, decision-makers, international experts, representatives of international organizations, the private sector, and society. Civil.

Water Week is organized annually in Cairo to exchange experiences and enhance cooperation in order to achieve water security and sustainable development globally, as well as to advance the common agenda in the field of water.

The agenda of Water Week in its eighth edition this year focuses on five main themes: cooperation, climate action, innovation, nature-based solutions, and sustainable infrastructure.

The total number of international and regional organizations participating in the week reached 95 international organizations, in addition to organizing 125 sessions within the week’s activities.
