China wins the largest fighter export deal in its history

The Indonesian authorities officially announced the decision to purchase Chinese J-10C fighters, which is the largest export breakthrough for the Chinese combat aviation industry to date. This achievement is presented in the context of the strong rise of the Chinese military air sector over the past decade, from the introduction of the J-20 “fifth generation” It entered service in 2017 to the experimental unveiling of designs for the sixth generation, in addition to allegations of the successful use of the J-10C in real combat engagements.

The reasons for choosing Jakarta highlight a combination of technical, political and economic factors: the J-10C is characterized by advanced electronics and armament, especially with its advanced missiles. The developed PL-15, and the cost of purchasing and operating it is lower compared to Western fighters such as the F-15EX, in addition to the absence of strict American export restrictions that may restrict the locations of its deployment or the types of weapons allowed. China is also able to deliver the aircraft more quickly, and offers its customers versions armed with the latest air-to-air missiles, which has given the model a clear competitive advantage.

In return for these advantages, the J-10C has important practical limitations, represented by a relatively limited flight range compared to heavy fighters such as the Su-27/30, Su-35, or F-15, which is a sensitive factor. Especially for Indonesia, as it is a large country.

However, lower operational costs and better life expectancy enable Jakarta to operate larger numbers and better distribution of aircraft, with solutions to compensate for range such as air refueling and carrying external tanks. Finally, the decision reflects a rapid consolidation of strategic relations between Beijing and Jakarta and opens the door to potential additional Chinese purchases of military aviation.
