The official opening of the Bank of Egypt – Djibouti in support of the partnership between the two brotherly countries

Within the framework of strengthening economic and investment relations between Egypt and Djibouti and in implementation of the outcomes of the presidential visit of Mr. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to the sister Republic of Djibouti in April 2025, during which the two sides stressed in the joint statement the strengthening of economic and investment cooperation between the two brotherly countries and accelerating the official opening of the Bank of Egypt – Djibouti, the official opening of the Bank of Egypt branch took place this morning in the capital, Djibouti – Djibouti.

This event confirms the depth of the fraternal and strategic relations between the two countries, and an embodiment of the growing Egyptian role in supporting economic and investment development in Djibouti and the Horn of Africa region.

The opening took place in the presence and honor of   Mr. Abdel Qader Kamel Mohamed, Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti, Mr. Mohamed Warsmah Dirih, Minister of Trade and Tourism of Djibouti, Mr. Ahmed Othman Ali, Governor of the Central Bank of Djibouti, along with Mr. Hisham Okasha, CEO of Banque Misr, Mr. Hossam El-Din Abdel Wahab, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Misr Djibouti, and Mr. Mohamed Afifi, Executive Director of Bank Misr Djibouti, with wide participation from members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Djibouti, and representatives International organizations, and a number of senior businessmen and representatives of the Djiboutian financial and business community.

Ambassador Abdel Rahman Raafat, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Djibouti, expressed during his speech his pride in implementing one of the most prominent outcomes of the presidential visit, noting that the Bank of Egypt – Djibouti is not just a financial institution, but rather represents a symbol of development and a bridge for economic and investment integration between the two brotherly countries.

The ambassador stressed that the Bank of Misr Djibouti will play a pivotal role in enhancing the exchange of expertise, transferring successful experiences, and developing financing mechanisms and modern banking services, in a way that contributes to supporting the policies of the Central Bank of Djibouti and enhancing financial inclusion and sustainable development efforts. The ambassador concluded his speech by emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to continue its support for Djibouti in implementing vital development projects, especially in the financial and banking sector, in implementation of the directives of the Egyptian political leadership aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and expanding the areas of economic partnership between the two brotherly countries.

In his speech during the opening, Mr. Hisham Okasha, CEO of the Bank of Egypt, confirmed that the establishment of the Bank of Egypt – Djibouti embodies the bank’s national role as one of the pillars of the Egyptian economic system, noting that the presence in Djibouti is not limited to providing banking services only, but rather aims to enhance the movement of trade, investment and development in East Africa through an integrated system of financial and financing solutions. He explained that the presence of Banque Misr in Djibouti and the countries of the region would enhance the growing trade relations between Djibouti, Egypt and the rest of the African and Arab markets, adding that this step represents a promising platform for regional banking and economic integration, and opens new horizons for the growth of investments in the ports, logistics and energy sectors, thus strengthening Banque Misr’s position as a leading financial institution with a growing African presence.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Djibouti expressed his country’s deep appreciation for the opening of Banque Misr – Djibouti, pointing out that Banque Misr is the oldest and oldest bank in Africa and the Arab world, and that the opening of its extension in Djibouti reflects the growing international confidence in the Djibouti banking sector. He also expressed his country’s sincere thanks to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian government for their continued support to Djibouti in various fields of common interest.
