Mubadala Energy announces significant progress on a major development project in Indonesia

ABU DHABI, 5 November / WAM / Mubadala Energy Company, the global energy company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, announced significant progress in plans to develop the “Tankulu” gas project, which is one of the main projects within its portfolio in the strategic location in the Andaman Sea.
The project is witnessing significant progress in the preliminary engineering design (FEED) and long-term implementation contracts (LLI), which has enabled it to progress faster than scheduled.
The plan of development (POD) is scheduled to be issued by the fourth quarter of 2025, and the final investment decision (FID) will be taken by June 2026, with gas production starting in the fourth quarter of 2028.
Mansour Mohammed Al Hamed, Managing Director and CEO of Mubadala Energy, said on this occasion: “Our significant discoveries in the South Andaman region, estimated at trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, represent a strategic growth opportunity for Mubadala Energy, and our tireless efforts to accelerate the pace of development of the project stem from the importance of its role in enhancing energy security in Indonesia in the future. We at Mubadala Energy also continue to implement our ambitious plans for sustainable growth, as our operations in Indonesia constitute a fundamental pillar of our plans.” To expand our global portfolio.”
In the same context, Mubadala Energy’s gas marketing strategy is making tangible progress towards achieving a common goal of supporting energy security in Indonesia, by providing reliable local gas supplies at competitive prices, which contributes to reducing dependence on liquefied natural gas imports.
The Tankulu field was discovered in May 2024 and is located within the South Andaman Joint Production Contract, approximately 65 kilometers offshore the northern island of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 3,400 meters, in waters approximately 1,200 meters deep, marking Mubadala Energy’s second consecutive deepwater natural gas discovery, with more than two trillion cubic feet of gas on site.
This discovery comes a few months after the discovery of the huge “Laiyaran” well, which contains more than 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, in the same “South Andaman” concession, which Mubadala Energy operates and owns an 80% stake in.
With its recent acquisition of the Central Andaman concession contract, Mubadala Energy now owns the largest net area of concessions in the region, strengthening its position as a major player in developing natural gas resources in Indonesia and increasing its production to meet local energy needs and create opportunities for international export.
In addition to Mubadala Energy’s significant momentum in key developments, the company recently hired more than 50 professionals in areas including deepwater exploration, development and project management, to support its business expansion in Indonesia.
The opening of its new advanced office, equipped with the latest digital technologies in Jakarta, also contributed to consolidating the company’s presence and enhancing its growth process in the Indonesian market.
These developments are accompanied by expanded community investment programmes, focusing on training national competencies and supporting educational and environmental initiatives that contribute to the development of local communities and building a sustainable future.
