"chandelier" It enters the South African market for the first time through the commercial launch of "Thuraya-4"

ABU DHABI, 10 November / WAM / Thuraya, a subsidiary of Space 42, announced the commercial launch of its new next-generation mobile communications satellite, Thuraya-4, in South Africa, in a move that represents Thuraya’s first operational presence in the country, and opens new horizons for providing reliable satellite communications services in one of the fastest growing digital markets in Africa.

This launch contributes to expanding the scope of national coverage and enhancing communications with vital sectors in South Africa, as “Thuraya-4” supports the digital transformation goals within the “South African Vision 2030”, helps raise the efficiency of operational performance in the industrial and government sectors, and also supports the development of the communications system and satellite infrastructure in the country.

Sulaiman Al Ali, Chief Commercial Officer at Space42, said that for more than twenty years, Thuraya has provided mobile communications services via satellite in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, to be a reliable partner for customers who depend on continuous connectivity and wide coverage, stressing that South Africa, with its interest in digital transformation and enhancing infrastructure flexibility, represents a natural extension of this journey.

“Thuraya-4” contributes to supporting the sectors most dependent on communication in South Africa, such as energy, mining, maritime navigation, civil government agencies, and humanitarian operations. Based on the priorities of digital transformation in the country, “Thuraya-4” expands the scope of communications networks to reach remote and high-risk areas, and raises levels of productivity, operational efficiency, safety, and business continuity in vital sectors of the national economy.

Thuraya is working on its entry into the South African market in close cooperation with regulatory authorities and local partners in the country, to ensure compliance with national licensing requirements and integration with local goals aimed at developing the communications system.

“Thuraya-4” provides a new generation of mobile and reliable communication services that exceed the capabilities of traditional broadband networks. “Thuraya-4” was developed to meet the needs of vital communications that require a wider range and a higher level of security and flexibility.

Through its advanced L-band payload and advanced software architecture, Thuraya-4 allows dynamic bandwidth redistribution, the ability to intelligently configure coverage, and ensure seamless integration with terrestrial networks even in harsh weather conditions or in remote areas. Together, these characteristics enable the provision of continuous and reliable connectivity to sectors that depend on constant communication in their operations.

Thuraya’s expansion into South Africa is part of Space 42’s strategy to enhance digital access and support satellite communications infrastructure on the African continent. In Zimbabwe, Space 42 has succeeded in connecting more than 1,000 schools and 500 hospitals, and is currently working to expand its coverage to include an additional 2,500 schools serving about 1.9 million students.

In Rwanda, its subsidiary, Mira Aerospace, implemented the world’s first 5G video call from a high-altitude fixed-wing aerial platform, an achievement that reflects the ability of these platforms to expand broadband coverage in areas inaccessible to satellites or terrestrial networks.

Space 42 signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft and Esri to implement the “Map of Africa” initiative, a program that aims to produce the first high-resolution map of the continent supported by artificial intelligence.
