Urgent.. The World Health Organization declares Egypt free of “trachoma” as a public health problem

During the opening of the activities of the third edition of the “World Conference on Health, Population and Human Development” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, announced, through a recorded speech, that the Arab Republic of Egypt is officially free of “trachoma” disease. As a public health problem.

 

Dr. Tedros extended special congratulations to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, during which he described this achievement as “historic and added to Egypt’s record of being free of diseases.” It was achieved through a comprehensive national strategy, which included:

· Implementing large-scale treatment campaigns

· Improving environmental and health conditions, especially in rural areas

· Intensive awareness programs

 

Together, these efforts resulted in a decrease in infection rates of the disease to less than 5% among children, which is the percentage that qualifies for obtaining a certificate of freedom from the disease as a public health problem.

 

In turn, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, confirmed that this achievement represents “a turning point in the Egyptian public health process, and is clear evidence of the The strength of international partnership and effectiveness in joint work to achieve global health goals.

 

It is noteworthy that trachoma was previously classified among the main causes of blindness in Egypt.
