المملكة: Jeddah Astronomy: The northern eruption meteor shower reaches its peak at dawn on Thursday

Jeddah Astronomical Society Engineer Majed Abu Zahra, that Meteor showerThe northern meteor shower will reach its peak during the night of Wednesday until dawn on Thursday, November 12 – 13, 2025, where sky monitoring enthusiasts in the Arab world can watch it if there is a clear and dark atmosphere away from light pollution.
Abu Zahra indicated that the activity of the meteor shower will begin after midnight, and that it will reach its peak at approximately midnight local time, as it will be the site of radiation – that is, the point from which the meteors emerge. Apparently – at an altitude of approximately 85 degrees above the eastern horizon in the constellation Taurus.
Bright meteors
Although the Northern Thaoris shower is considered a relatively calm shower, with an average rate not exceeding 5 meteors per hour in the best conditions, it is famous for producing bright, slow-moving meteors, which gives sky lovers a distinctive aesthetic spectacle.
He added that the presence of the moon in its final square phase this year will negatively affect monitoring, It will light up the sky during the second half of the night, hiding most of the faint meteors, while the brighter meteors will remain visible to the naked eye only.
The president of the association pointed out that artificial light pollution in major cities increases the difficulty of monitoring, calling on those interested to go to dark areas far from lighting to follow the astronomical event.
Annual showers
He explained that the northern eruption shower is part of the annual showers associated with the comet. "”Enki”, which is one of the oldest known comets, leaves behind small dust particles that enter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers, generating those beautiful lines of light that we see in the sky.
For the best viewing, Abu Zahira advised staying away from city lights, and letting the eye adapt to the darkness for 15 minutes before observing, while directing the gaze towards the eastern horizon in the last hours of the night until dawn.
He concluded. By saying that the Northern Thawriyya Shower, despite its modest rate, remains one of the showers that sometimes surprises observers with its slow, bright meteors that catch the eye for a few moments before disappearing on the horizon.
