Launching the Sustainable Development Goals Research Program to enhance the role of scientific research in achieving the 2030 Global Agenda

Al Ain, November 15 / WAM / The National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates University, launched the Sustainable Development Goals Research Programme, as part of the national efforts aimed at enhancing the contribution of higher education institutions in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, and consolidating the role of scientific research in developing practical and innovative solutions that contribute to achieving the Global Agenda 2030, in line with the UAE’s future vision of building a sustainable knowledge economy.
The program launch event on the university campus in Al Ain was attended by His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange, Chairman of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, His Excellency Professor Dr. Ahmed Al Raisi, Director of the UAE University, and a number of faculty members and university students.
During his speech at the event, His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah stressed that the cooperation between the National Committee and the UAE University represents a national model for integration between government agencies and academic institutions, stressing that the Sustainable Development Goals Research Programme, in its goals and directions, embodies the visions of the UAE and the focus of its wise leadership on enhancing scientific research because it represents a major tool for development and supporting decision-making processes. It also confirms the program’s commitment to empowering youth and researchers to be partners in creating realistic solutions that enhance the achievement of sustainable development goals.
He said that the program constitutes a national platform that combines academic thought and government expertise, in a distinct learning and research model that allows the transformation of research outputs into initiatives and policies that enhance the country’s position in global indicators and support its presence as a center for sustainable knowledge.
For his part, His Excellency Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Raisi stressed that the launch of this program represents a new milestone in the UAE University’s journey towards research leadership. He said that the goal of the program is to empower young people to be active elements in shaping the future, and to integrate the idea of sustainability into education and scientific research to generate knowledge that provides realistic solutions to the challenges of the era, from climate change to the sustainability of cities and clean energy.
He added that the program embodies the fruitful partnership between academic institutions and government agencies, and that the UAE has made sustainability a national priority, through field work and effective partnerships, pointing out that the program strengthens the university’s position as a leading national research institution and academic partner in supporting the country’s march towards achieving the 2030 sustainable development goals.
The program focuses on encouraging students to develop applied scientific research that addresses multiple fields including climate, energy, environment, health, education, and economic growth, in addition to enhancing their skills in research, analysis, and formulating sustainable scientific solutions.
The program seeks to activate academic and institutional partnerships within an integrated national system that supports the transformation of research outputs into practical initiatives that contribute to developing public policies and achieving the desired societal impact.
The cooperation between the National Committee and the UAE University is a practical embodiment of Goal 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is partnerships to achieve the goals, as efforts are integrated to build a new generation of researchers capable of keeping pace with global challenges and innovating qualitative solutions that serve humanity and the environment, while the launch of the program reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting the education and scientific research system as a basic pillar for achieving comprehensive development, and enhancing its position as a regional and global center for knowledge and innovation in the fields of sustainability.
