Organized the national program to develop Livestock and Fisheries Sector In cooperation with the General Fisheries Authority for the Mediterranean and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO" Yesterday, the Saudi Aquaculture Society held a workshop entitled: "Labeling of national fishery products".
And sponsored by Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, with the aim of enhancing the quality of fish products and raising their competitiveness in local and international markets.
The Assistant Undersecretary for Livestock and Fisheries at the Ministry and member of the Board of Directors of the National Program for the Development of the Livestock and Fisheries Sector, Dr. Ali bin Muhammad Al-Sheikhi, explained that the workshop highlighted the importance of labeling and accreditation systems in fish value chains.
It reviewed a number of successful international experiences and ways to develop a national framework; It enhances consumer confidence in Saudi products, and contributes to the sustainability of the aquaculture and marine fishing sector in the Kingdom.
International and regional experiences
Dr. Al-Sheikhi confirmed that a number of local and international experts and specialists and representatives from international organizations; They discussed local and global trends in accreditation and labeling of fish products, and related regulations, and reviewed a number of international and regional experiences in the field of accreditation and labeling certificates, including experiences from Greece, Spain and Turkey, in addition to an organized methodology. "FAO"
They also presented scientific papers on responsible investment opportunities in the fishery products sector, the concepts of labeling and accreditation in fishery products and their impact on quality and marketing, and the role of accreditation certificates in enhancing value chains for fishery products.
Enhancing marketing value
At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants concluded a number of recommendations, the most notable of which are: It is necessary to motivate government and private agencies to support the accreditation and labeling system, benefit from successful international experiences, focus on enhancing the marketing value of national fishery products, and build relationships and partnerships with international bodies, in addition to formulating practical recommendations for responsible investment and marketing.
Food labeling is one of the most important direct means of communicating product information to consumers, helping them make healthy food choices, and enhancing their confidence in food products. Labeling also contributes to raising the quality of products and increasing their competitiveness locally and internationally.
