The European Union denounces Musk’s “crazy statements” after his call to cancel the bloc

The European Union on Monday condemned Elon Musk’s online attack on the bloc after Brussels imposed a fine of 120 million euros ($140 million) on its X platform.

“This falls within the framework of the freedom of expression that we adhere to, which allows absolutely crazy statements,” European Union spokeswoman Paula Pinho said.

Commenting on the fine, Musk said on his X account, “The European Union must be abolished and sovereignty returned to states, so that governments can better represent their people.”
“I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the European Union,” he continued in another post.

Following a high-level investigation that was seen as a test of the European Union’s resolve to pursue violations of major technology companies, a fine was imposed on the social media platform owned by the richest man in the world on Friday for violating the Union’s digital rules.

The administration of US President Donald Trump was quick to criticize the fine.

Trump had assigned Musk to lead efforts to reduce the size of the federal workforce and reduce spending, before disagreements separated them.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio considered the fine “an attack on all American technology platforms and the American people.”
