Putin supports Maduro in the face of American pressure.. Is tension rising?


The Kremlin announced on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin renewed his support for Venezuela during a phone call with President Nicholas Maduro, in the midst of tension between Caracas and Washington after the United States confiscated an oil tanker off the coast of the country.
The Kremlin statement after the call said: "Vladimir Putin expressed his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and affirmed his support for the Maduro government’s policy aimed at protecting national interests and sovereignty in the face of increasing external pressures."
The two leaders affirmed their mutual commitment to implementing joint Russian-Venezuelan projects, especially in the economic, energy and trade sectors.

The rapprochement between Moscow and Caracas

In May, Maduro, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, announced further rapprochement between Moscow and Caracas by signing a cooperation treaty.
