Dr. Manal Awad discusses with the governors of Cairo and Port Said the development of the Ataba, Al-Hamidi and commercial markets

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, held a meeting with Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo. Major General Moheb Habashi, Governor of Port Said; To follow up on the proposal for the second phase of developing the Ataba market in the Al-Muski neighborhood in Cairo; Developing Al-Hamidi and commercial markets in Al-Arab and Al-Manakh neighborhoods; Which is conducted in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, “Habitat”.
HABITAT
The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Local Development in the New Capital; In the presence of Major General Ibrahim Abdel Hadi, Deputy Governor of Cairo for the Western Region; Ashraf Mansour, Deputy Governor of Cairo for the Southern Region; Ahmed Rizk, Country Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, Egypt; A number of leaders of the Ministry of Local Development; Cairo Governorate and Habitat program officials.
Developingpathways
At the beginning of the meeting; The proposal to develop the paths and public spaces on Al-Hamidi and Commercial Streets was reviewed. In the commercial zone in Port Said Governorate and the design vision; Which was presented by the project consultant, Dr. Mohamed Salehin, Professor of Planning at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, and includes improving the infrastructure, paths, and improving the lighting and shading elements of the markets, while preserving the visual identity of the area, which contributes to improving the experience of residents and visitors, Egyptians and foreigners, leading to enhancing the economic activity of the city; Providing job opportunities and supporting the sustainable development of the city and its economic and heritage value; In order to achieve a civilized environment and contribute to attracting visitors and increasing purchasing power.
The Governor of Port Said also reviewed the current situation on the ground in the region; The governorate’s full cooperation in implementing the proposed development will contribute to maximizing its tourism and economic role. Creating various marketing activities in the targeted streets, creating a smooth experience for visitors, facilitating pedestrian and car movement, and preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of the region in full coordination with business owners; To ensure development is achieved without harming their interests.
Ataba
The meeting also witnessed a presentation from Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo; For the proposal for the second phase of developing the Ataba market in the Al-Muski neighborhood; Which contributes to eliminating randomness and crowding, organizing the work of vendors, opening pedestrian paths and citizens frequenting the streets targeted for development in the second phase, while providing safety and security factors by providing firefighting systems and surveillance cameras, reviving the historical and architectural character of the area, and restoring the splendor of heritage and historical properties.
Cultural Value
Dr. Manal Awad confirmed that the Ministry sought to develop a number of markets and local communities in the governorates, most notably the project to develop the public spaces of the Ataba Market in Cairo Governorate; The first phase of which was completed with funding from the Ministry of Local Development, and the development was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, as well as some paths in Port Said Governorate, which contributes to improving the quality of life of citizens, providing better services, providing sustainable job opportunities, and enhancing the cultural value of historical heritage cities. In a way that contributes to the rehabilitation of Egyptian tourist attractions and their integration into a comprehensive urban development system.
The Minister of Local Development praised the technical support provided by the United Nations Human Settlements Program to the Ministry and the governorates where it implements these projects; Which seeks to improve infrastructure and develop commercial streets and markets in the governorates; While preserving the historical and cultural identity of the cities and enhancing opportunities for tourist attraction.
The meeting was attended by Engineer Alaa Abdel Fattah, Assistant Minister for Planning and Urban Development; Dr. Saeed Helmy, Head of the Strategic Management and Local Development Sector; Engineer Zizi Kamel, head of the Central Administration for Strategic Management, and the heads of the Helwan and Muski districts; Dr. Mohamed Salehin, consultant and professor of planning at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University; Engineer Iman Hassan; Engineer Lubna Anous, officials of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme; Dr. Khalil Shaat, Director of the Slum Development Department in Cairo.
