Because of matcha, Japanese green tea exports reach their highest level in 70 years

Government and industry data in Japan showed that green tea exports during the first ten months of this year reached their highest level in more than 70 years, driven by the boom in the matcha powder market abroad and the decline in the value of the Japanese yen.
The data indicated an increase in tea exports during the period between January and October 2025 by 44%, compared to the same period last year, to reach 10.08 thousand tons.
The United States was the first destination for exports, as it imported 3,497 tons during the first ten months of this year.
It is noteworthy that green tea exports in Japan have been rising continuously for the ninth year in a row, which reflects the increasing popularity of Japanese food products abroad among health-conscious consumers.
