Heavy rains cause widespread flooding in southern France

Heavy rains caused widespread flooding in the Hérault region, southern France, during the past few days, leading to evacuations, disruption of transportation, and interruption of electricity supplies.

Severe floods also swept through several towns in the Hérault region in France, after heavy rain fell in just three days, equivalent to two months of rain.

In Montpellier, the Lys River overflowed, submerging roads, tram lines and public transport, while many streets became impassable.

Rivers also burst their banks near Béziers, submerging homes in Saint-Tibery.

In the coastal town of Palavas-les-Flots, dozens of residents were evacuated to emergency shelters.

The authorities reported power outages affecting about 1,000 homes, while warnings of severe weather conditions remained in place.

As for the town of Sommier, located in the Gard region, the overflow of the Vidorel River led to the market square being submerged with water, according to Reuters.
