Snow disrupts transport and travel in Britain, France and the Netherlands

A wave of extreme cold accompanied by snow disrupted travel today in Britain, France and the Netherlands, where roads were closed, flights were suspended and trains, including the Eurostar, were cancelled, after a few days of disruptions that followed a power outage.

Eurostar, which links the United Kingdom to the European mainland, asked travelers between London and the Netherlands to postpone their flights, with trains unable to operate after Brussels due to bad weather conditions.

After announcing the suspension of train traffic in the Netherlands, Eurostar asked concerned passengers not to go to the station.

Six trains between St Pancras International stations in London and Gare du Nord in Paris were also cancelled, with most other trains delayed.

The Dutch Railways Company reported:NS) that its services were severely disrupted today, especially in the Amsterdam region, with the number of trains reduced in some areas of the country on Tuesday.

Flights were also canceled at several airports, including Liverpool in northwest England, Aberdeen and Inverness in northeastern Scotland, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

At the main airports of Charles de Gaulle and Orly in Paris, heavy snowfall forced airlines to reduce their flights by 15%.

At the Netherlands’ main international airport, Schiphol, about 700 flights were cancelled, more than half of the flights scheduled to take off or land today.

In Paris, snow and ice disrupted the bus network this afternoon, and roads were severely affected, especially in the northwestern Normandy region, with heavy traffic congestion during peak hours.

In Scotland, police warned road users against trying to drive on roads closed due to dangerous weather conditions.
