50% of cars in the country will be electric by 2050

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure reported that the current year will witness an expansion in the spread of ultra-fast and high-speed electric chargers across the emirates of the country, according to the plans set, to meet the growing demand for electric cars.

She stated on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week that this trend comes within the strategy and plans of transitioning towards clean energy and reducing emissions, explaining that the target, by 2030, is for all buses belonging to the federal and local government to become electric, while the target, by 2050, is for 50% of cars in the country to become electric.

In detail, Engineer Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, said that there is a noticeable expansion in the deployment of electric car chargers across the country, especially after the launch of ADNOC Distribution, one of the largest high-speed charging complexes for electric vehicles in the world, and the launch of an integrated charging station in Ajman, which shows that the expansion plan to deploy chargers is moving forward in various regions of the country.

Al-Ulama added, in press statements on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, that cooperation between the Ministry and the relevant authorities, whether in the energy sector or smart mobility, contributes to increasing the number of electric chargers on the roads and within cities, pointing to the continued expansion during the current year in the deployment of ultra-fast and fast chargers across the emirates of the country, according to the established plans, in order to meet the growing demand for electric cars.

He stated that this trend comes within the strategy and plans of transitioning towards clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Al-Ulama explained that the number of electric car chargers nationwide currently reaches 1,200, noting that there are plans to expand electric vehicle charging stations through the Emirates Company, especially in the Emirate of Dubai, due to the large increase in demand for electric cars.

The scientists stated that the target, by 2030, is for all buses belonging to the federal and local government to become electric, while the target, by 2050, is for half of the number of cars within the country to become electric.

He stressed that the Global Alliance for Energy Efficiency is witnessing a great demand from countries, as the number reaches 40 countries, at a time when there is a great desire from banks and the private sector to join the alliance, pointing out that there will be a ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the government summit next month, to discuss the latest developments.

Al Olama pointed out that Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week focuses on harnessing artificial intelligence to solve the problems of the energy sector, especially with the spread of data centers across the country, the number of which has reached 65. He said: “We conducted a comprehensive study of the already existing centers and those under construction, and we are working on developing a clear strategy to manage the expansion of data centers and how to support them with the energy and water they need for operation.”
