Britain will not yield to Trump’s pressure regarding Greenland

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Parliament on Wednesday that he would not yield to pressure from US President Donald Trump regarding the future of the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.

Starmer added, “I will not yield, and Britain will not give up its principles and values regarding the future of Greenland under the threats of customs duties, and this is my clear position,” noting that he will host his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen, in London on Thursday.

Trump had threatened to impose customs duties on Britain and other European countries because of their opposition to his efforts to acquire Greenland.

Starmer was also criticized in Parliament by the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, Kimmy Badenoch, against the backdrop of Trump’s condemnation of his government’s agreement on the Chagos Islands.

In response to the criticism, Starmer told MPs: “President Trump’s words were explicitly intended to put pressure on me to compromise my principles. What he said about Chagos was literally in the same sentence he spoke about Greenland. That was his goal.”

He added, “The future of Greenland is a critical issue that divides the world at the present time, and has tangible consequences. I have been clear and firm in my position regarding the future of Greenland. This future is decided by Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.”
