UAE University launches the pilot phase of autonomous transportation within its campus

Al Ain, January 22 / WAM / The United Arab Emirates University announced, as part of its participation in the UMEX 2026 exhibition, that it has completed its readiness to launch the pilot phase of the autonomous transportation project within the university campus, in partnership with the “K2” company, and in coordination with the Integrated Transport Center of the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, which undertakes regulatory supervision to ensure the application of the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.
The project aims to enhance the innovation system and implement sustainable future mobility solutions that support the quality of university life, as the center provides a precise regulatory environment to monitor the compliance of the proposed solutions with international best practices.
Commenting on the project, His Excellency Professor Dr. Ahmed Ali Al-Raisi, Director of the UAE University, confirmed that this step embodies the university’s orientations towards harnessing innovation to serve the educational environment, indicating that the project represents an effective model of partnership between the government and private sectors, to link scientific research with practical application and provide a smarter and more efficient university environment.
For his part, Dr. Abdullah Hamad Al Ghafli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Center, explained that the project reflects the Centre’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of autonomous transportation systems in Abu Dhabi within safe frameworks, pointing out the importance of the role of universities in providing realistic testing environments that contribute to developing policies and building the national competencies necessary for this vital sector.
In turn, Professor Dr. Hamad Abdullah Al Jasmi, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Emirates Center for Mobility Research at the University, pointed out that the project goes beyond being a means of transportation, to become an advanced research platform for collecting operational data and conducting live experiments that support the development of self-driving mass transportation solutions, and enhance the readiness of the country’s infrastructure and legislation for future technologies.
