Russia claims the Donbass region ahead of talks with Ukraine


Confirmed Russiahas not given up on its main demand of Ukraine’s withdrawal from the eastern Donbas region, ahead of tripartite talks between Ukrainian, Russian and American officials later on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr ZelenskyThe issue of the territories claimed by Russia is still the main issue and will be on the agenda of the talks, which appear to be the first direct public negotiations between Moscow and Kiev regarding a plan pushed by US President Donald Trump to end the war that has been going on for nearly four years.

Ending the War

High-level teams from the three countries are preparing to conduct negotiations, a day after Trump met with Zelensky in Davos, and hours after US envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with President Vladimir Putin. In the Kremlin, it extended until the early hours of Friday morning.

While diplomatic efforts to end the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II have intensified in recent months, Moscow and Kiev have not yet reached an agreement on the issue of the territories claimed by Moscow.
