Dubai Municipality and Knowledge Authority successfully conclude an initiative "Planting 20 thousand trees"

DUBAI, 30 JANUARY / WAM / Dubai Municipality and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai concluded the “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative in parks, residential neighborhoods and educational institutions, which was launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, assuming the reins of government in the emirate, and as an embodiment of His Highness’s vision of promoting sustainability and preserving the environment as a shared national and societal responsibility.

The initiative was an inspiring model for transforming national events into sustainable development projects with a long-term impact and contributed to expanding the green area in the Emirate of Dubai, and enhancing the participation of all segments of society in afforestation and environmental preservation efforts, in line with the objectives of the urban environment axis within the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the Dubai Urban Plan 2040.

The initiative witnessed wide participation from a large number of government agencies, private companies, and educational institutions, in addition to families and residents of residential neighborhoods, in an integrated manner that reflected the culture of teamwork and consolidated environmental awareness among segments of society.

A number of general directors and executive directors of the Dubai Government participated in field tree planting activities, in an inspiring model for integrating the efforts of government agencies with the local community, and an affirmation of the commitment of government institutions to support national initiatives that support sustainability and preserve the emirate’s distinct identity at the urban level.

Dubai Municipality carried out the implementation of the technical and operational aspects of the initiative, by providing seedlings and ensuring their diversity among ornamental trees, fruit trees and shrubs, and identifying planting sites in a number of the emirate’s parks, in addition to applying the best sustainable agricultural practices, and using smart irrigation systems and modern technologies that ensure the efficient use of resources and the sustainability of the planted trees in the long term, as well as developing an integrated plan to follow up on the trees, monitor their growth, and provide them with the necessary care to ensure the achievement of the environmental and aesthetic goals of the initiative.

For its part, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai led efforts to involve schools and universities in the initiative, by enabling educational institutions to participate in agricultural activities on their campuses, and facilitating coordination with Dubai Municipality to provide seedlings and technical support, which contributed to enhancing the role of students in environmental work, and instilling the values ​​of sustainability and social responsibility from an early age.

The Furjan Dubai Foundation played a pivotal role, as the community partner of the “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative, as it coordinated the participation of residents of residential neighborhoods and families in community agriculture activities, organized field events in a number of residential areas, and promoted the initiative through its digital platforms. The Foundation also allocated a number of volunteers to provide support and guidance to the participants.

His Excellency Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said that the wide participation and great interaction witnessed by the “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative from government and private agencies, educational institutions and community members reflects the consolidation of sustainability as a business approach and community culture in Dubai, as the initiative contributed to raising the level of environmental awareness and expanding the green area, in a way that supports Dubai’s vision as a pioneering global city in the field of sustainable development.

He added that the initiative embodies Dubai Municipality’s commitment to adopting innovative and sustainable environmental solutions based on long-term planning and strengthening institutional and community partnerships. The initiative represents an environmental and cultural investment that contributes to improving air quality and enhancing public health. The municipality will continue to monitor planted trees and ensure their sustainability in accordance with the best agricultural practices, in order to achieve a sustainable environmental impact that benefits current and future generations.

For her part, Her Excellency Aisha Abdullah Miran, Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, said that the “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative: is a practical model for integrating the concepts of sustainability into the educational system, based on our belief in the role of education in enhancing environmental awareness and instilling the values ​​of sustainability in the hearts of students by engaging them in realistic practices that contribute to enhancing environmental awareness and translating these values ​​into daily behavior.”

She pointed out that the broad community interaction with the initiative and the participation of educational institutions in it reflect a growing awareness of the importance of the role of education in building a more sustainable future, stressing the Authority’s commitment to continue working with its partners to support and implement initiatives that enhance the participation of students and the educational community, in line with Dubai’s aspirations and goals within the Education Strategy 2033.

The “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative supports the goals of the “Green Dubai” project, which aims to increase greening and agricultural beautification areas in the emirate, raise the per capita share of green spaces, and provide a healthy environment that enhances the quality of life.
