The Ruler of Sharjah witnesses the launch of the 20th session of the Sharjah Nabati Poetry Festival

Sharjah, February 2, 2017 – His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, witnessed this evening the launch of the activities of the 20th session of the Sharjah Nabati Poetry Festival, which will be held from February 2 to 9, with the participation of more than 70 male and female poets, and an elite group of critics and media professionals from various Arab countries, at the Palace of Culture.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah honored the poets Saeed Bulahj Al Rumaithi and Ali Juma Al Suwaidi, for their cultural and literary efforts in the field of Nabati poetry, and their distinguished contributions to preserving the authentic poetic heritage, enhancing its presence in the cultural scene, and enriching the literary arena with works that embodied national identity and societal values.

His Highness and the audience watched a material that dealt with the path of the two poets honored in this session, and their most prominent literary milestones and their contributions to public cultural affairs at the level of Nabati poetry, through which the two poets expressed their thanks and gratitude to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for His Highness’s kindness in honoring them and paying attention to the poets.

The poet Butti Al-Mazloum recited a poem entitled “Sultan’s House,” and the poet Saeed Saif Al-Taniji delivered a poetry reading entitled “The Source of Goodness.”

The poet Saeed bin Ghalita Al-Ghafli gave a poetry reading entitled “A Stroke of a Pen.”

The Sharjah Popular Poetry Festival represents a prominent cultural event that brings together poets, critics and the public, and contributes to the development of Nabataean poetry and enhancing its presence as a living memory of the homeland and identity.

The festival confirms the status of Nabati poetry in Emirati society, highlights the specificity of cultural identity, and seeks to discover its aesthetic connotations and document the Emirati, Gulf and Arab poetic scene.

The current session of the festival will present a group of activities based on diversity and excellence, as it includes holding eight poetry evenings, including a critical symposium that discusses the literary career of the honored poets.

The festival will also move its activities to the cities of Al Dhaid and Kalba, in a scene that reflects spatial and cultural diversity, and allows participants to learn about the cultural, heritage and historical character of the two cities.

The ceremony was attended alongside His Highness by Sheikh Dr. Salem bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Head of the Office of His Highness the Ruler, Rashid Ahmed bin Al Sheikh, Head of the Emiri Diwan, Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais, Head of the Department of Culture, Ali Salem Al Midfa, Head of the Sharjah International Airport Authority, Mansour Mohammed bin Nassar, Head of the Legal Department of the Government of Sharjah, Hamad Ali Al Mahmoud, Head of the Economic Development Department, Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, and a number of senior officials, poets and media professionals.
