Abu Dhabi Children’s Library at the Cultural Foundation launches "1000 books before kindergarten"
ABU DHABI, 4th February, 2018 (WAM) – The Cultural Foundation, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, announced the launch of the global initiative for early reading, “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.”
Under the slogan “Reading starts from day one,” Abu Dhabi Children’s Library is the official host of this initiative in the United Arab Emirates, affirming its commitment to nurturing emerging minds and laying strong foundations for learning in the future.
The “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” initiative targets children from birth to five years of age, encouraging families to read at least a thousand books with their children before they enter kindergarten. The initiative contributes pivotally to enhancing the essential role of shared reading in early brain development, language acquisition, and preparation for school education. It also confirms that parents and caregivers are the first and most important teachers during the sensitive years of a child’s life, from birth to five years of age.
On the occasion of launching the initiative and supporting participating families, the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library will host an information session for parents on February 6, at five in the evening. The session aims to introduce families to the framework of the initiative, effective reading aloud strategies, and ways to integrate reading smoothly into the daily routine, while the initiative will celebrate the progress of young readers at each milestone of reading 200 books, concluding with a special celebration upon completion of reading 1,000 books, which enhances motivation to continue and instills a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Throughout the reading journey, parents and caregivers will receive continuous support and guidance, through the provision of carefully selected book lists and reading tools, in addition to continuous follow-up and support from Abu Dhabi Children’s Library, ensuring that families feel confident and supported at every stage.
Through this initiative, the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library reaffirms its role as a pivotal knowledge center for the family, and an essential pioneer in supporting early reading skills, by empowering parents as the first teachers of their children, and establishing solid foundations for future learning, which contributes to enriching the cultural and educational scene in Abu Dhabi.
