"Abu Dhabi Transport" Expand services "Robotaxi"

ABU DHABI, 9th February, 2018 (WAM) – The Integrated Transport Center “Abu Dhabi Transport”, affiliated with the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, announced the expansion of autonomous vehicle “Robotaxi” services to include new areas throughout the emirate, under the supervision of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Council, in a strategic step that reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to enhancing the smart mobility system and supporting sustainable transport goals.

This expansion is consistent with Abu Dhabi’s vision for smart and autonomous transportation, as part of a comprehensive strategy that aims to provide safe and effective future transportation solutions that contribute to raising the efficiency of the transportation network, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the quality of life for all members of society.

The center explained that the new phase of expansion includes operating robotaxi vehicles in areas characterized by their liveliness and population density, including Khalifa City, Masdar City, and the Rabdan area, in addition to launching new routes linking the Abu Dhabi Corniche and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which provides broader smart transportation options for residents and visitors, and enhances their benefit from self-driving services in the emirate.

We Ride and Uber, in cooperation with the local operator Tawasul, operate the service commercially in accordance with approved permits.

The center confirmed that the next phase will witness the expansion of the fleet of autonomous vehicles to keep pace with the increasing demand and support the rapid growth of the service, ensuring enhanced operational readiness and raising performance efficiency.

He pointed out that this step comes as a continuation of the successes the service has achieved since its launch, as the previous operation included Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Reem and Al Mariah Islands, in addition to Zayed International Airport, which contributed to consolidating Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading destination in adopting future transportation solutions.

He stated that the service has recorded a growing demand since its launch, achieving a growth in the number of trips by approximately 150% during the year 2025, driven by previous operational expansions and the high level of user confidence in the smart technologies adopted in operation, while the safety rate of these vehicles reached 99.9%.
