Europe: Strengthening the occupation’s control over the West Bank contradicts international law
Denounce The European Union The unilateral steps taken by Israel and granting itself broader powers to control the occupied West Bank, stressing that they are counterproductive and contradict international law.
In a joint statement, the High Representative for Foreign Policy in the European Union, Kaya Kallas, along with Commissioners Dubravka Suica in charge of Mediterranean Affairs and Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hajja Habib, said: "The new steps would undermine ongoing international efforts aimed at achieving stability and peace in the region"
Contrary to international law
The statement added: "The new steps approved by the Israeli Security Ministerial Council regarding the West Bank are counterproductive and contradict international law"The Union reiterated its firm position not to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territories it has occupied since June 1967, in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The statement warned that decisions affecting the implementation of the Hebron Protocol between Israel and the Palestinian Authority may jeopardize "The sensitive status quo at religious sites is at risk".
