Nouakchott Arab Poetry Festival concludes its 11th session

Nouakchott, February 12, 2017 – Yesterday evening, the Nouakchott Arabic Poetry Festival brought down the curtain on the activities of the eleventh session, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and organized by the Sharjah Department of Culture over a period of 3 days, with the participation of Mauritanian and African poets, intellectuals, and critics from Senegal, Mali, and Gambia.

The closing ceremony, which was held at the Nouakchott Poetry House, was attended by His Excellency Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Owais, Head of the Sharjah Department of Culture, Muhammad Ibrahim Al Qasir, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs in the Department, and Dr. Abdullah Al-Sayyid, director of the house, and a large number of university students, writers, and lovers of Arabic poetry.

The eleventh session was distinguished by a rich package of activities that included poetry evenings, a qualitative critical symposium, in addition to the signing of a group of poetry collections issued by the Sharjah Department of Culture.

The closing day of the festival witnessed a critical symposium entitled “Problems of Structure and Meaning in Modern Mauritanian Poems,” in which critics Dr. Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Nati, Dr. Muhammad Al-Amin Suhaib, Dr. Khadija Muhammad, Dr. Born Mtali Lamrabet, where they discussed the most prominent transformations that affected the rhythmic structure, poetic language, and artistic image, and the accompanying openness to questions of self, identity, and social transformations.

The symposium witnessed a remarkable interaction from the attendees, who enriched the discussion with their interventions and questions about the prospects and future of Mauritanian poetry and the extent of its ability to keep pace with cultural transformations in a way that enhances its presence in the Arab poetic scene and establishes its creative specificity.

Poets participating in the Nouakchott Arab Poetry Festival stressed that Sharjah represents a pioneering model in supporting and nurturing culture, praising the role of the Sharjah Department of Culture and the activities it provides that enhance the literary movement in the Arab world.

They pointed to the prominent role played by the House of Poetry in Nouakchott, expressing their appreciation for the renewed platform it provides for poetry and creators and the richness and radiance it adds to the Mauritanian cultural scene, stressing that such initiatives contribute to building bridges of communication between poets and Arab societies and support the spread of culture and creativity.
