An expected change in the 2029 Club World Cup

The past hours have witnessed surprising developments regarding the system adopted for the Club World Cup in its next edition, 2029.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the European Football Association (UEFA) is ready to support FIFA’s proposal to expand the Club World Cup to include 48 teams in the next edition in 2029.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) wants to increase the number of clubs in the next edition, as an indication of improved relations between Aleksander Ceferin, President of UEFA, and Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA. Thus, the number of participating teams will increase from 32 to 48 teams, which is a very large number.
UEFA opposed plans to expand the Club World Cup for fear that the tournament would threaten the status of the Champions League, but now UEFA is ready to support FIFA in exchange for a commitment not to hold the tournament every two years, but rather every four years.
Since the 2025 edition, FIFA has expressed its readiness to expand the tournament to include 32 teams in order to ensure the participation of major European clubs after teams such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United failed to qualify for the previous edition.
