Abu Dhabi Police revives a legacy "Breakfast cannon" At Al Maqta Museum during the month of Ramadan

ABU DHABI, 26th February, 2017 (WAM) – The Abu Dhabi Police General Command is commemorating the tradition of launching the “Iftar Cannon” at Al Maqta Museum during the holy month of Ramadan, as an affirmation of its keenness to preserve the police heritage, enhance national identity, and consolidate the historical values that have shaped the features of Emirati society over the decades.
Abu Dhabi Police is organizing the event in cooperation with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, as part of joint efforts to revive cultural heritage and enhance its presence on national and religious occasions, as the Iftar cannon in Al Maqta Museum is one of the established Ramadan symbols that embody the authenticity of the past and the spirit of society.
The Maqta Cannon, affiliated with the Police Heritage Department, embodies an ancient legacy associated with the Maqta Tower, which played an important defensive role in the past and witnessed the stages of development of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The tower guards used the cannon for defensive purposes, and it was customary when the crescent of Ramadan was sighted or the Eid was announced, for the ruler to issue an order to fire it to rejoice in the occasion.
Abu Dhabi Police remanufactured a cannon similar to the historical cannon for use in Al Maqta Museum, continuing the tradition of firing it to mark the time of Iftar in the context of preserving this heritage, reflecting the connection between the past and the present, and enhancing the authentic Ramadan atmosphere.
