9 professional obligations governing teacher use of generative artificial intelligence in schools

The Ministry of Education has assigned teachers in government schools in various emirates of the country nine professional obligations that regulate the teacher’s use of generative artificial intelligence within the classroom, stressing that these tools are supportive means of achieving educational goals and are not a substitute for the teacher’s educational role or a derogation from his professional duties.

Quality of learning
According to the guide for the safe and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence in classrooms, which Emirates Today reviewed, the obligations included: employing artificial intelligence in a way that enhances the quality of learning without replacing the teacher; Verifying the accuracy and scientific credibility of the content; Ensure its cultural and educational suitability. Ensure its compatibility with the curriculum and approved evaluation standards; Reviewing the integrity of the Arabic language and accuracy of wording.

Save privacy
Responsibilities included supervising students’ use of tools in a way that preserves privacy and enhances academic integrity. Establishing clear controls that define cases of permission for use – such as the stage of generating ideas or preparing drafts – and cases of prohibition, especially in projects and evaluations; Obliging students to disclose any authorized use and document violations and submit them to the school administration. In addition to adapting the use to support people of determination and students who face learning difficulties, while involving parents transparently in the application policies.

Prohibited content
The Ministry stressed that students’ adherence to the controls on the use of generative artificial intelligence is an integral part of their academic responsibility, emphasizing that they limit the use of approved tools only and with direct permission from the teacher, while prohibiting their use in prohibited tasks, especially exams. It obligated them to inquire when there is any ambiguity, and to explicitly disclose the use of the tools when asked to do so, in addition to verifying the accuracy of the resulting information, and rephrasing it in their own style in a way that preserves the authenticity of the work and enhances independent thinking skills.

The Ministry also prohibited entering any personal data into digital platforms, sharing passwords, or attempting to bypass security systems using unauthorized tools such as VPN or proxy programs.

The Ministry obligated students to immediately report any prohibited content or improper practices, ensure that inputs and outputs are consistent with the values of the UAE, and keep drafts and records of inputs whenever the teacher requests review, in order to establish a culture of transparency and digital discipline within the school environment.
