The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program announced «Rural Saudi Arabia» about the rose sector in the Kingdom achieving qualitative leaps in production quantities, and an increase in global demand for it; This contributed to the recovery of the rose trade, and the sector recorded a growth in annual production of more than 15%, achieving significant economic returns for small rose farmers and producers in Taif Governorate, and contributing to increasing their income and improving their standard of living, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
The official spokesman for the “Saudi Countryside” program, Majed Al-Braikan, explained that the sector Roseis considered one of the most important sectors supported by the program, by providing guidance and technical support services to farmers and producers, starting with financing their agricultural projects in the cultivation and storage stages, all the way to helping in marketing their products inside and outside the region. The Rose Producers Association was also established in the Taif region to contribute to supporting and developing the sector.
Rose cultivation in Taif
He added that the Taif Governorate is one of the most important rose production regions in the Kingdom, as its farms are spread in a number of The sites, including Al-Hada, Al-Shifa, Al-Hasba, Al-Qadeen, Wadi Muharram, South Taif, Al-Hawiyah, and Al-Sail.
The total area of rose cultivation in Taif is about 700 hectares, which includes approximately 1,300 farms, producing approximately 500 million roses annually, indicating the presence of 36 factories for the production and manufacture of perfumes, with a value of up to 52 million riyals.
Al-Braikan stated that the environmental conditions The climate in Taif Governorate is suitable for the growth of aromatic plants, which contributes to the development of the cultivation and trade of roses in the governorate, as these plants are characterized by their low need for water and their high efficiency in use, in addition to the low costs of collecting and cultivating them.
High Demand
He pointed to the spread of more than 20 types of aromatic plants, which has increased the internal demand for them, in addition to the increase in global demand for various types of roses by a rate ranging between 10 and 15% annually, With the expanding uses of these plants in the manufacture of perfumes, medicine and treatment, and their addition to water, tea, and cold and hot drinks.
The official spokesman for the “Saudi Countryside” program pointed to the great cooperation by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in implementing many initiatives and projects supporting the rose sector, within the framework of the effective partnership between the Kingdom and the organization.
He pointed out that there are some challenges facing the sector, including the lack of scientific studies and research on developing plant strains in the stages of the production chain, in addition to Weakness of agricultural cooperatives active in the field of roses, which could contribute to developing production and productivity and facilitating financing services directed to small farmers and producers.
