The Secretary-General of the United Nations condemns the killing of two peacekeepers in Lebanon

Secretary-General António Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two peacekeepers and to the Republic of Indonesia. He expressed his wishes for a speedy and complete recovery for the two injured soldiers.
A press statement issued by the United Nations spokesman indicated that this was the second fatal incident within 24 hours, and stressed the need to stop attacks on peacekeepers, which represent serious violations of international humanitarian law and…Security Council Resolution No. 1701 (2006).
The spokesman said that these actions may amount to war crimes. “Accountability must be ensured. No one should die serving the cause of peace.”
In the statement, the UN Secretary-General urged all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times.
Guterres expressed his appreciation to all the brave men and women serving in UNIFIL, stressing the importance of ensuring their safety and security, and the freedom of movement of UNIFIL forces.
The United Nations urged the parties to immediately reduce the escalation and fully adhere to their obligations under Resolution 1701.
