The President of the Federal National Council emphasizes the role of parliaments in promoting peace, humanitarian response and maritime security

Federal National Council Speaker Saqr Ghobash stressed the importance of strengthening coordination and consultation between parliaments on regional and international issues, which contributes to supporting peace and stability paths and consolidating political solutions to crises.
This came during a meeting between the Speaker of the Federal National Council, Saqr Ghobash, and the First Deputy Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Oleksandr Kornienko, on the sidelines of the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the 217th session of the Governing Council, which is hosted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Istanbul, the Republic of Turkey, under the slogan “Promoting Hope, Ensuring Peace and Achieving Justice for Future Generations.”
At the beginning of the meeting, Federal National Council Speaker Saqr Ghobash welcomed the Ukrainian delegation, appreciating the Ukrainian position condemning the brutal Iranian attacks on the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
He praised the level of communication existing between the two sides, stressing the importance of investing parliamentary meetings in enhancing mutual understanding and intensifying coordination on issues of common interest, especially in light of the challenges posed by international crises.
The two sides exchanged views on the humanitarian cost of conflicts, and stressed the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially children, and refusing to target vital facilities, while stressing the need to strengthen international efforts with a humanitarian dimension.
Federal National Council Chairman Saqr Ghobash stressed that the UAE represents a global model in consolidating the values of tolerance, coexistence and stability, noting that its approach is based on giving priority to realistic solutions and institutional work to ensure the continuation of development paths despite the challenges.
The meeting discussed the importance of protecting the security of international waterways, especially the Strait of Hormuz, and the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation and not using seaways as a means of pressure or blackmail, as this has direct repercussions on the global economy and supply chains.
The two sides discussed a number of files, including the issue of prisoners, where the importance of intensifying international efforts to release civilian groups and enhance protection for the population in areas affected by the conflict was stressed.
In a related context, Federal National Council Speaker Saqr Ghobash reviewed the UAE’s position on the brutal Iranian attacks, stressing that the country has pursued a balanced policy based on restraint, avoiding escalation, and not engaging in any military actions, based on its firm commitment to supporting regional and international security and stability and ensuring the continuity of the flow of energy supplies and the stability of the global economy.
He stressed the importance of coordinating positions within the Inter-Parliamentary Union in a way that contributes to issuing unified parliamentary positions that support international stability.
He pointed out that the UAE hosted the second round of tripartite talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States as part of its diplomatic efforts to support the political track, stressing that this hosting reflects international confidence in the country’s role in facilitating dialogue and promoting peaceful solutions.
Regarding bilateral relations, the two sides praised the level of parliamentary cooperation, stressing the importance of activating the UAE-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Committee, enhancing the exchange of experiences, and intensifying joint meetings in a way that supports bilateral relations.
The role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening economic relations and the possibility of expanding private sector participation in a way that contributes to the development of the economic partnership between the two countries was also emphasized.
The two sides pointed out that relations between the UAE and Ukraine have witnessed remarkable development over the past years and have achieved advanced levels of cooperation, as the UAE is one of Ukraine’s most prominent trading partners in the Middle East region, and is also one of the largest Arab investors in it, especially in vital sectors.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the Federal National Council, Saqr Ghobash, the member of the Federal National Council, Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, the members of the Federal National Council, Mira Sultan Al Suwaidi, Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, and Sarah Muhammad Falaknaz, the Secretary General of the Council, Dr. Omar Abdul Rahman Al Nuaimi, the Assistant Secretary General for Council Presidency Affairs, Tariq Ahmed Al Marzouqi, and the UAE Ambassador to Turkey, Saeed Thani Al Dhaheri.
