Tight security measures in Islamabad on the eve of talks between Washington and Tehran

Islamabad witnessed a noticeable tightening of security measures on Sunday, according to what journalists at Agence France-Presse reported, on the eve of a possible new round of talks between the United States and Iran.

The Pakistani authorities announced on Sunday the closure of roads and the imposition of traffic restrictions throughout the Pakistani capital, as well as in the neighboring city of Rawalpindi.

AFP reporters spotted armed guards and checkpoints near a number of hotels, especially the Marriott and Serena, where the round of talks took place last week.

Most of the streets leading to the Serena Hotel were closed on Sunday, and barbed wire and barriers were erected, with heavy security deployment and traffic diversions.

A municipal official in Islamabad asked residents to “cooperate with the security services.”

This coincided with US President Donald Trump’s statement on his Truth Social platform, that an American delegation will arrive in Islamabad on Monday to hold talks on Iran. There has been no official announcement in this regard from Pakistan or the Islamic Republic yet.

The two parties held lengthy discussions at the end of last week in an effort to put a final end to the war in the Middle East, without reaching an agreement.
