Following the circulation of video clips on social media platforms showing the impact of the Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Misnad revealed the scientific details of this phenomenon, warning of its danger during this period of the year.
Al-Misnad explained that what the Qassim – Medina roads witnessed a short while ago is due to what is known as “downward winds,” which are among the most dangerous weather phenomena associated with the cumulus cloud season during the month of April, as they form suddenly and may cause serious accidents, especially on open roads.
Causes of the overturning phenomenon Trucks
He indicated that the speed of these winds may range from 80 to 120 kilometers per hour, and in some severe cases may exceed the barrier of 150 kilometers per hour, which is a speed capable of overturning trucks, uprooting tents and caravans, in addition to toppling billboards and every light or poorly fixed object.
He pointed out that this phenomenon arises as a result of cold and heavy air masses descending from the core of cumulonimbus clouds, from heights ranging from 3 to 10 kilometers, as it rushes forcefully towards the surface of the Earth, then spreads violently horizontally in all directions, forming what looks like a shock front loaded with dust and wind.
He added that the main reason behind these high speeds is due to the sudden cooling inside the cloud, resulting from the evaporation of raindrops and the melting of hail, which leads to an increase in the density of the air and an acceleration of its downward rush, in a phenomenon similar to an air explosion when it reaches the surface of the Earth.
Danger of descending winds
Al-Misnad pointed out that the danger of descending winds lies in the nature of their radial spread, as they do not move in one direction as is the case with traditional winds, but rather spread suddenly and fluctuating, which makes predicting their direction or intensity more difficult, and increases the possibility of accidents.
He concluded by issuing a direct warning, calling on road users and camp owners to be careful, and to leave camping sites as soon as they notice the advance of a dust front or a dark horizontal cloud. Accompanied by active winds or a sudden drop in temperature, it is necessary to secure belongings and stay away from high or unstable vehicles, in order to maintain safety.
