The association’s participation was an extension of Sharjah’s continued cultural presence in Italy and a continuation of its efforts to introduce the Arabic language and literature to the European and international academic and cultural community. The festival’s activities witnessed a scientific and literary program that focused on the impact of Arabic on European literature and the paths of linguistic, narrative and poetic interaction between Mediterranean cultures, with the participation of 24 academics, researchers, translators and writers from 13 Arab and European countries.
Dr. Muhammad Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, confirmed that the Academy, under the direct supervision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, continues to implement major linguistic projects, the most prominent of which is the “Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language,” which was completed with the participation of 13 countries and is in 127 volumes and has become available through digital platforms, indicating that the Academy is currently working on preparing a comprehensive Arabic encyclopedia with the participation of scholars from more than 20 countries. Covering the fields of language, literature, arts and sciences.
He added that the Academy organizes an annual conference for Orientalists and Arabists in Europe to promote linguistic research and build links between Arabic and other languages, noting that the last of these meetings dealt with what he described as “migratory words” and observed a wide presence of Arabic vocabulary in a number of European languages, which reflects the depth of cultural interaction, linking this presence to the Arab presence that Sicily witnessed that lasted for nearly three centuries and the accompanying movement of translation, Arabization and social communication that contributed to the spread of Arabic words in European space, explaining The Academy is preparing to hold its fourth conference next October to support the Arabists and expand areas of cooperation with them.
Mosteghanemi explained that the Arabic Language Academy annually receives delegations of students coming from European and Asian universities, including universities in Italy, Austria, Poland, Kazakhstan and South Korea, based on the firm conviction that when the student lives the language in its living environment, he learns it in a deeper and more solid way.
At the level of the scientific program, the festival included a series of research sessions that addressed the presence of Arabic in European languages and literatures from multiple angles. Among the most prominent sessions witnessed by the festival was the session “Between Laws and Conscience: Judicial Literature in Arab and European Traditions” and the session “Arabic Words and Linguistic Communication in Europe,” in addition to two sessions that dealt with the impact of “One Thousand and One Nights” in Italian and German literature.
The festival’s activities also reviewed models of Arabic narrative from Andalusia to the present time, examined the transformations of Arabic narrative and its connection to the formation of modernity, and opened a window on poetic and literary dialogues between Mediterranean cultures through approaches that revealed the depth of the mutual influence between Arabic poetry and modern European literature.
