Drought will affect 156 thousand square kilometers of European Union territory during 2024
Eurostat data showed that Drought waves affected about 156,703 square kilometers of land Ecological systems.
She indicated that measuring drought depends on monitoring the decrease in soil moisture during the growing season, which leads to a decline in vegetation cover, noting that despite the relative decrease in the affected areas during the years 2023 and 2024, the general trend over the past decade shows a noticeable increase, with high peaks recorded in 2018 and 2022.
Finland topped
The data showed that forests cover about 39% of the area of the European Union, with Finland, Sweden, and Slovenia at the top, compared to the lowest percentages in Malta, the Netherlands, and Ireland.
The indicators stressed the importance of strengthening policies for managing natural resources and adapting to climate change to reduce land degradation and preserve biodiversity.
