United Nations: The Iran war may push 30 million people into poverty
The Director of the United Nations Development Program warned that the war on Iran, which has led to higher energy and fertilizer prices, may push more than 30 million people into poverty.
Alexandre De Croo stated on the sidelines of the G7 development meeting in Paris:"It took decades to build stable societies and develop local economies, and it only took a few weeks of war to destroy them."
160 countries affected
De Croo continued: "We conducted a study six weeks after the war, and we estimated that even if the conflict ended at that point, 32 million people would be pushed into a state of vulnerability in 160 countries."
He explained that discussions are already underway within the corridors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
The United Nations Development Program warns of a profound impact of the war on the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as on some countries in Asia such as Bangladesh and Cambodia, and developing island countries will also be severely affected.
