The UAE is establishing its global leadership in adopting innovative medicines to enhance community health

Abu Dhabi, May 18 / WAM / The UAE provides a pioneering model in adopting modern medicines and medical treatments that improve patients’ experience and contribute to accelerating and increasing the opportunities for treating the most complex diseases and the most dangerous to human health.

During the current year, the UAE has consolidated its superiority in this field as it has transformed into a global platform for medical innovation and advanced therapeutic trials, which reflects its continued commitment to community health and enhances the attractiveness of its health sector at the regional and international levels.

In this context, the Emirates Medicines Corporation announced the approval of the innovative drug “Baxfendy” for high blood pressure, which is used in concentrations of 1 mg and 2 mg, as an additional treatment option in addition to antihypertensive medications for patients who are unable to control their blood pressure levels adequately.

The UAE is the first country in the world to grant approval for this treatment, developed by AstraZeneca, in a step that enhances the efficiency of pharmaceutical care, especially in the field of cardiovascular diseases.

“Baxfendi” helps lower blood pressure by inhibiting an enzyme responsible for producing the hormone aldosterone in the body, which provides a therapeutic approach that targets the root causes of the condition, especially in patients who suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure despite receiving traditional treatments.

Emirates Pharmaceuticals also announced the approval of the drug “EURneffy”, which contains the active ingredient “epinephrine”, in concentrations of 1 and 2 mg, making the Emirates the first in the region to approve this product as the first nasal “adrenaline” spray intended for emergency treatment of severe hypersensitivity cases in adults and children aged four years and above.

This preparation constitutes a qualitative addition to the health care and pharmaceutical system in the country, by allowing the treatment to be administered intranasally as an innovative alternative to injections, which enhances the speed of response in dealing with acute allergy attacks.

For its part, the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi announced the inclusion of a daily oral medication to treat obesity within the personal weight management program, as it combines medical treatment with behavioral support and continuous digital follow-up, to address the challenges associated with treatment adherence and achieve tangible and sustainable health results.

The introduction of this daily oral medication represents a qualitative leap in reducing the obstacles associated with some traditional treatments, especially those that may limit adherence, as it provides a practical and easy-to-use alternative that enhances individuals’ confidence in continuing with their treatment plans.

This treatment has been approved by the UAE as the second country in the world after the United States of America for use in adults living with obesity, or who suffer from overweight accompanied by at least one weight-related health condition.

These achievements come as an extension of a long process of health excellence that the UAE has established over the past years. In 2025, the country adopted a group of innovative treatments, most notably the drug “relzabrutinib” to treat immune thrombocytopenia, which is the first oral inhibitor of the enzyme Bruton’s tyrosine kinase in the world, and aims to restore the balance of the immune system and increase platelets in patients.

In the same year, the drug “Tolbrutinib” was approved for progressive, non-relapsing multiple sclerosis, making the UAE the first country to grant it approval globally. The drug “Etvisma” was also approved to treat spinal muscular atrophy using gene therapy for children and adults with a mutation in the SMN1 gene, making the UAE the second country in the world to grant it approval. In addition, the country approved the drug “CasGevi” to treat sickle cell anemia for patients aged 12 years and above, affirming its commitment to providing access to The latest innovations in the field of genetic medicine.

The UAE continued its leadership in the field of biological treatments, as the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi approved the drug “Tremfya” to treat ulcerative intestinal inflammation and Crohn’s disease, making the country the first destination outside the United States of America to provide this innovative treatment.

The UAE’s history in confronting urgent health challenges reflects its pioneering position, as it was the first country in the world to grant emergency use for treating the Covid-19 virus with monoclonal antibodies, to alleviate the complications of the disease and reduce hospitalizations and deaths by up to 85 percent, in addition to developing a supportive treatment with stem cells that contributes to enhancing the body’s ability to recover.

In terms of neurological diseases, the UAE is the second country in the world to adopt the drug “Adohelm” to treat the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, giving patients an early opportunity to improve their treatment plan and quality of life by inhibiting the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques.

The UAE has distinguished itself globally in providing innovative treatments for type 2 diabetes, including continuous monitoring technology using a smart chip under the skin, which helps to control sugar levels continuously and improve the quality of life of patients.

The UAE has developed cancer immunotherapies that rely on the production of T cells that mimic the immune system, capable of recognizing and fighting cancer cells, which contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of health care and making treatment available to patients efficiently and easily.
