11 million dirhams to support multiple sclerosis research within the research grants program

Abu Dhabi, 18 May / WAM / The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has allocated funding amounting to approximately 11 million dirhams within its research grants program supporting multiple sclerosis research, coinciding with the launch of the fourth cycle of the program and funding 4 research projects within its third cycle, in a step that reflects its commitment to enhancing scientific research and medical innovation in the UAE, especially in the areas of multiple sclerosis and autoimmune diseases.

It is expected that the outcomes of the fourth session will focus on expanding scientific understanding of multiple sclerosis, including studies related to immunobiology, genetic and environmental risk factors, therapeutic innovations, and precision medicine based on biomarkers, in addition to clinical strategies aimed at improving levels of patient care.

The funded research projects included a study that employs artificial intelligence techniques to improve the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging, which enhances the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and distinguishes it from neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, and contributes to improving monitoring of disease progression and therapeutic response, reducing rates of misdiagnosis, and supporting early therapeutic intervention.

The funding also included a project to develop a proactive diagnostic tool based on artificial intelligence that combines clinical data, medical imaging results, and genetic information to help determine the most appropriate treatment options for people living with multiple sclerosis in the UAE.

The projects also included a research study called “HEAL MS” examining the impact of lifestyle-based medicine interventions, including nutrition and movement patterns and stress management methods, on the vital indicators and general health of people living with multiple sclerosis, in addition to a research project studying the potential therapeutic effect of the neuroprotective compound “Hi1a” extracted from the venom of the Australian funnel-web spider, and the extent of its ability to protect neurons and contribute to the restoration of myelin using brain organoids derived from patients.

Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said that supporting specialized research at this level of depth represents a fundamental foundation for enhancing awareness of multiple sclerosis and improving the methods of care provided to those living with it, noting that the projects that won funding reflect the rapid development that the UAE is witnessing in the field of scientific research, especially with the use of the latest artificial intelligence and precision medicine technologies, which contributes to producing scientific knowledge relevant to the reality of the local community and supporting global efforts to develop more effective solutions for people living with the disease around the world.

The association invited researchers interested in participating in the fourth session to submit their initial applications during the period between June 1 and July 5, provided that the detailed research files will later be completed according to the approved schedule for the program.
