After Trump’s visit, Putin arrives in China to hold discussions with Xi
Russian President Vladimir Putin to China on Tuesday, a few days after a visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing.
During the visit, Putin will hold talks with his counterpart Xi Jinping, in a move aimed at highlighting the strength of relations between the two countries.
The Chinese official CCTV channel broadcast scenes of Putin’s plane landing at Beijing International Airport.
Putin is scheduled to discuss with his counterpart Xi ways to enhance the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China, according to a statement issued by the Kremlin.
Annual visit
Relations between the two countries have deepened since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, as he visits Putin China annually since then, at a time when his country faces isolation on the international scene.
However, the relationship between the two sides is not equal, as Moscow’s economic dependence is focused on Beijing, which has become the main buyer of Russian oil subject to sanctions.
Among the files on the table for discussion is the natural gas pipeline project. "Power of Siberia 2" (Siberian Power 2), which will link Russia to China via Mongolia, as a land alternative to oil imported by sea from the Middle East, a project that Moscow is keen to accelerate.
30 years of strategic partnership
In an indication of the positive atmosphere accompanying Putin’s Chinese visit, the two leaders exchanged congratulatory messages on Sunday on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the strategic partnership between their countries.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun praised the friendship. The well-established relationship between China and Russia.
In a video message to the Chinese people published on Tuesday, Putin said that relations between Moscow and Beijing have reached an unprecedented level, and that trade exchange between them continues to grow.
He added that the close strategic relationship between Russia and China plays an important role at the global level, and without allying against any party, we seek peace and prosperity for all, without reference to any third country.
The two leaders are also expected to sign a joint declaration at the conclusion of the talks.
