Under the directives of Mohammed bin Rashid "Dubai Humanitarian" Airlift operations are completed with a second shipment in support of efforts to combat Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
DUBAI, 9 JUNE / WAM / Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, Dubai Humanitarian Commission has flown a second relief air shipment in support of the ongoing emergency response efforts to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo via Uganda, in close coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Protection and European Humanitarian Aid Operations of the European Commission.
The Boeing 747 aircraft, provided by the Dubai Royal Pavilion, carried a shipment bound for Uganda, including about 60 metric tons of vital humanitarian and medical aid provided by the United Nations Humanitarian Response Warehouse Network of the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF.
Giuseppe Saba, Executive Director and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian, said: “This is the second relief flight that we are facilitating within one week in response to the Ebola outbreak, embodying the UAE’s firm commitment to supporting humanitarian work and standing by those in need wherever they are. Through this process, we are bringing together several members and partners from the Dubai Humanitarian community, strengthening the model of multiple partnerships in terms of logistical coordination, expertise and resources, and thus enabling a faster and more effective humanitarian response.”
Saba added: “This operation reflects the growing strategic cooperation between Dubai Humanitarian and the European Union, following the administrative arrangement signed between the two sides last year, which confirms our common goal to improve the speed, sustainability and impact of humanitarian operations globally. Despite the existing challenges, we consider the continuity of humanitarian operations a responsibility more than an option.”
For his part, Maciej Popowski, Director-General of Civil Protection and European Humanitarian Aid Operations at the European Commission, said: “International cooperation is essential to respond to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in the entire region. I welcome the speed of Dubai’s humanitarian response to deliver relief supplies to eastern DRC at this critical time. The European Union stands in solidarity with all affected communities and remains strongly committed to supporting efforts to contain the virus and save lives.”
