"Dubai Electricity and Water" It adopts an intelligent system to enhance the efficiency of distribution networks

Dubai, June 10 / WAM / The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has adopted an advanced smart system to enhance reliability in electricity distribution networks.

The “autonomous system for restoring power in the smart grid” is one of the pioneering solutions that is based on complete automation and immediate decision-making, which supports the grid’s readiness to keep pace with the rapid urban and economic growth in the Emirate of Dubai. The new innovation is currently being used in the energy distribution sector at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, which confirms the authority’s leadership in adopting advanced technical solutions that contribute to the development of a smart and flexible infrastructure capable of meeting the requirements of the future, and enhancing Dubai’s position at the forefront of smart cities in the world.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said: “We continue to adopt smart and advanced solutions in the management and operation of electricity networks, in line with the sound vision of the wise leadership to make Dubai the city of the future and home to the most reliable, efficient and sustainable energy networks in the world. The “self-recovery system for power recovery in the smart grid” constitutes a qualitative leap in the flexibility of the electrical network, as it allows immediate response to faults and reduces the scope of the impact on customers to the extent possible. The minimum, and accelerating the restoration of service with high efficiency and operational accuracy supported by real-time data and smart analyses. This innovation also reflects our commitment to enhancing business continuity and raising the readiness of vital infrastructure, by building a smart energy system capable of predicting, adapting and responding flexibly to various operational challenges, thus establishing Dubai’s global leadership in the field of smart and sustainable electrical networks.”

The smart system relies on automatically isolating the affected feeder and re-feeding the unaffected loads by transferring them to neighboring circuits, ensuring continuity of service. The system also allows the location of the fault to be determined with high accuracy, based on indicators at distribution stations, and the use of advanced algorithms that take into account the location of the fault, load distribution, and the availability of alternative power sources, to choose the optimal scenario to restore service quickly and efficiently.

The self-recovery system is integrated with the equipping of all stations affiliated with the feeder with smart electronic devices and remote terminal units, which allow real-time monitoring of operational data and provide a comprehensive view of the network’s performance, which contributes to early detection of faults and accelerating remediation processes. The system also relies on modern communication protocols on local subnetworks, which ensure reliable and instantaneous data exchange between stations and the distribution control center, and enhance operational coordination between the various components of the network.

Innovation is one of the practical applications of operational intelligence in distribution networks, as it contributes to raising the level of reliability, improving the efficiency of asset utilization, in addition to supporting the safety of technical teams by reducing unnecessary field interventions and enhancing the ability to make decisions based on accurate and immediate data.

Engineer Rashid bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of the Energy Distribution Sector at DEWA, said: “The system represents an advanced step in the path of transformation towards smart distribution networks capable of self-recovery. The system has contributed to enhancing the speed of response to faults, improving reliability indicators, and supporting continuity of service to customers, which reflects DEWA’s commitment to applying innovative solutions based on automation, and supporting operating efficiency and network sustainability in the long term.”
